UK Specialty Hospitals (UKSH)
ORI organized, financed and led a consortium including
New York Presbyterian Hospital and a British engineering
services firm to win a $220 million five year contract
with the UK government to build and operate a specialty
orthopedic, ophthalmology and general surgery hospital
(an Independent Sector Treatment Center’). At
the signing of this contract, ORI founded a UK company,
UK Specialist Hospitals Ltd (UKSH) with a prominent
UK private equity source. The first UKSH hospital, the
Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre (SMTC), located in the
West of England, opened in July, 2005 and performs 12,000
procedures annually. A study sponsored by the UK Department
of Health demonstrated that SMTC has the most outstanding
performance with regard to clinical quality and efficiency
in that program as well as the NHS. Clinical complication
rates are at levels on par with the best performance
of US and British institutions, virtually 100% of surveyed
patients report they would return as a matter of choice
and recommend the hospital to relatives and friends.
Cases per doctor are over twice the level typical of
national health service hospitals and lengths of stay
for joint replacement cases is less than half of the
typical national health service levels.
As a result of this performance, UK Specialist
Hospitals is a “preferred bidder” for and
expected to be awarded a second six year, $410 million
contract to develop and operate three similar hospital
projects also in the West of England. These new projects
are scheduled to open in 2009 and will be affiliated
with Vanderbilt University. More…
