ORI assisted two health insurance plans in Botswana,
which serve government and private company employees
and their families, to develop and operate a 200 acute
care bed private tertiary hospital in Gaborone, the
capital. Bokamoso Private Hospital provides comprehensive
emergency care including trauma cases, women’s
and children’s health services, orthopedics,
cardiac, neurosciences, and oncology specialties.
Cardiac consultations and diagnostics are available
now; CV surgery will be available in April/May 2010
as will Dialysis services.
It provides these specialty
services to private pay patients and to government
pay patients under a contract designed to reduce substantially
the need to send publicly supported patients abroad
for specialty care. In addition, an objective of the
hospital sponsors and the Government, which has endorsed
the project, is to attract patients from a wide area
in southern Africa and beyond, based on the clinical
excellence of the hospital’s programs. The hospital
also serves the secondary care needs of the insured
population base.
Construction of the
hospital began in March 2008; it opened January 2010.
ORI provided a turn-key service and oversaw all services,
including the development of all clinical, operating
and administrative policies and procedures and the
completed construction, equipping and commissioning
of the hospital.
It assembled a southern
African and American team that formulated the business
and clinical plans, completed space and equipment
and information technology planning and architectural
design, and negotiated the construction contract.
In the pre-opening period the team is recruiting doctors
(among whom are re-patriated Botswana doctors trained
in the US and Europe), nurses, and all support staff,
as well as recruiting the administrative leadership
for the hospital. Today it has 80 doctors who were
recruited from 22 countries and 198 nurses that include
115 Botswana nurses and 83 expats.
Bokamoso has a state of the art Health Information
System that will enable the hospital to operate in
a paperless environment, providing electronic medical
records and a telemedicine capability with satellite
connectivity to the United States and other countries.
The hospital is located
on a 32 acre site with planned expansion to 300 beds.
An on site rehabilitation facility with 30 beds and
an in-town outpatient centre is already in the planning
stages. The facility has been designed to meet international
accreditation standards. Today it has:
- 1 Cardiac Catheterization
Suite
- 1 Endoscopy Suite
- Accident and emergency
facility fully equipped—helipad for country
wide service
- 8 operating theatres
- Extensive, state of the art imaging and laboratory
diagnostics capability, including Clinical Chemistry,
Endocrinology, Immunology, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring,
Hematology, Coagulation, Histology, Cytology, Microbiology
and HIV Therapeutic Monitoring.
Prior to opening ORI worked with the Vanderbilt University
School of Nursing which provided on site pre-opening
training and assist. Together with ORI’s Advisory
Committee and hospital management, ORI provided clinical
guidelines for the hospital’s specialty procedures.
Post opening, ORI will advise management on the on-going
operations of the facility during its initial five
years. The hospital’s International affiliations
include Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare System, Memphis
and the University of North Carolina – Chapel
Hill.
